CARB II Compliance
Medium density fiberboard (MDF) boards that are CARB Phase II compliant meet the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) standards for formaldehyde emis- sions. The regulation limits formaldehyde emissions from MDF to 0.11 parts per million (ppm). The goal of the regulation is to reduce formaldehyde emissions and improve indoor air quality. We use E0 Grade Formaldehyde Emission Standard of MDF, which is the most health-friendly level for users.
Products that are labeled as CARB Phase II compliant can be sold in California and other places that have similar regulations. A CARB Phase II compliant seal indicates that the product releases a small enough amount of formaldehyde to be considered safe.
FSC® Certified MDF
FSC® MDF refers to MDF which is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® and can therefore prove its environmental credentials. FSC-compliant MDF boards” are MDF products made with wood from forests that are certified by the FSC as being responsibly and sustainably managed. This certification provides assurance to consumers that the product is environmentally friendly and socially responsible.

Frequently Asked Questions
MDF, or Medium Density Fiberboard, is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood and softwood fibers, combining them with resin, and pressing them under high heat and pressure. This process creates a smooth, dense, and uniform panel that is widely used in cabinetry and furniture.
MDF is smoother and more uniform than plywood and solid wood, which makes it an excellent choice for painted finishes and detailed designs. While plywood and solid wood are typically stronger and more moisture-resistant, MDF offers superior consistency, affordability, and flexibility in design.
MDF can be considered eco-friendly because it uses recycled wood fibers that might otherwise go to waste. At Bienal, we source MDF that meets strict environmental and low-emission standards to ensure sustainability.
The main benefits of MDF include its smooth and uniform surface that is ideal for painting or veneering, its cost-effectiveness compared to other materials, and its excellent machining properties that allow for detailed cuts and designs. MDF is also dimensionally stable, meaning it is less likely to warp under normal conditions.
Yes, MDF is more affordable than solid wood and high-grade plywood while still offering durability and design flexibility. This makes it a cost-effective choice for cabinetry without sacrificing quality.
MDF performs exceptionally well in terms of design flexibility because it can be cut, carved, and shaped with ease. This makes it particularly suitable for detailed profiles, paneling, and smooth painted finishes.
MDF is an excellent material for painted kitchen cabinets, closet systems, bathroom vanities when properly sealed, entertainment units, shelving, decorative panels, and wall units.
Yes, MDF can be used in kitchens, bathrooms, and closets. For areas with higher humidity, moisture-resistant MDF is recommended, which is specially treated to perform better in damp environments.
MDF is suitable for both residential and commercial projects due to its versatility, affordability, and design adaptability. It is widely used in homes, offices, and large-scale projects alike.
MDF is generally less durable than solid wood or premium plywood in extreme conditions, but when properly finished and maintained, it can last for decades. It is highly stable against warping and splitting, which makes it a reliable choice for cabinetry.
Standard MDF is not naturally moisture-resistant, but moisture-resistant MDF is available and performs very well in kitchens and bathrooms when finished and sealed correctly. With proper care, MDF withstands daily use effectively.
MDF should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap. Harsh chemicals and excessive water should be avoided, as they can damage the surface. Painted or laminated MDF should always be cleaned according to the care manuel provided by Bienal to ensure long-lasting beauty.
